I truly feel we would have beaten Harkin IF the grassroots citizens could have chosen who WE wanted. Thank you.Flag

Name: Kathryn Kist on Nov 13, 2002Comments: The Republican Party needs to have faith in the people of its party to pick appropriate candidates for the party. This is the kind of personal responsibility we claim we stand for. After the party members have decided who the candidates should be, the party should pour all of its resources into electing that candidate instead of wasting its donated resources in skewing the outcome of a primary. As the last elections showed, conventional political "wisdom" often turned into folly at election time.Flag

Name: Stan Siems on Jan 26, 2003Comments: Letter to the Editor As we start this New Year the state of Iowa faces many problems; one of them is the attempt to control property taxes some have suggested placing a cap on increases I have another approach. What we really need to look at is the abolishment of property taxes completely. Property taxes are the most unfair taxes that exist in Iowa. In the United States you are supposed to have the right to own property in Iowa you do not have that right, in Iowa the State owns all the property. One of the big reasons we have run down houses and buildings in this state is directly due to property taxes, no one wants to fix them up as they know the state will then raise there property taxes. Ninety percent of the money raised by property taxes goes to schools, so why don't we replace the property tax with a school tax that EVERY ONE Pays, why should only property owners pay I really believe that if the case of property taxes were taken to the Supreme Court that they could be declared as unconstitutional. If the State of Iowa doesn't do some thing soon to encourage business to come to this state we will soon be a state of old and retired people who will be burdened with more taxes which will encourage them to leave also.
