I fell for Tom the first time I listened to him on a holiday in DC back in 2002 and since then I had his shows recorded for me on CD and mailed back here. I also record more whenever I go visit. | 44 | A.D. | On Friday June 22, at approximately 5pm, I turned to 103.7 Free FM to hear the Tom Leykis Show, but instead I heard Jack Johnson. I was confused, but -- in my ignorance of the situation and of the radio industry itself -- dismissed the music as possible filler for technical difficulty.
The next day I did not hear the weekend shows, but instead, more vapid music. That's when I realized thatFree FM was really dead in San Diego. Now I find that it's dead in Phoenix, too.
I understand that ratings are the only things the CBS executives care about, and the decision to keep or drop formats will come from those results. So be it; there's nothing the loyal listeners of 103.7 can do to influence your format management. But I can tell you that "Sophie" won't attract any listening demographic that isn't already being targeted by FM stations 90.3, 91.1, 93.1, 93.3, 94.1, 98.9, and 100.7.
103.7 used to be a great station. I could keep radio on that station all day long, even though I could easily listen to my own CD player or my own mp3 player. Every change seemed to be for the better--the Adam Corolla Show improved with the addition of Danny Bonaduce, Dennis Miller's commentary was insightful and stimulating, and Dave and Jeff was by far the best addition for the San Diego market. When they replaced the L.A.-based Frosty, Heidi, and Frank Show, I imagined that the station could get no better.
I know radio isn't made for the discerning listener like myself, but I will be saddened to see Free FM go. The greatest tragedy in all this will be the departure of Tom Leykis. I tuned in to him everyday, even if I missed other shows. Tom, you will be missed. I hope he can return to the city that was so glad to see him on Father's Day.
In the meantime I will be listening over the internet to Free FM whenever I can. |
