I am a loyal product user. Yet I share all of these frustrations. Freedom Scientific, as the largest software provider for the blind and visually impaired community needs to demonstrate a companywide commitment to putting its customers first. More and more options are out there.Flag

For the type of research results it gives, we have social media like Facebook and Twitter or better still, Google. The resorces pumped in to stuff like Research it, can be used elseware to actually improve core funktionality in Jaws.Flag

Name: Dave Carlson on Oct 4, 2012Comments: I've been a JAWS user since version 3.5. Since JAWS 9, I've noticed that Freedom Scientific appears to migrate more toward adding features to JAWS and keeping JAWS relevant to changes in Office and Windows changes -- more so than fixing bugs/issues in previous versions. For example, a lot of time was spent in creating ResearchIt, which is a nice tool. However it required continual maintenance to keep it working and I felt frustrated that fixes continued to come out for ResearchIt but not for problems in various applications like Outlook and Internet Explorer. I use JAWS (Job Access With Speech) in my J-O-B to keep myself employed and support my family. So having an access solution that works with minimal "fussing" and "sleight-of-hand" workarounds is very important to me. The more time I spend struggling with Outlook, Excel, and IE due to lockups and crashes is less time to be productive. And productive I need to be if I want to be relevant to my company. Not only do they pay my salary and benefits, but they pay for JAWS and the ongoing upgrades. I would be embarrased to admit to them how much money they've spent since version 3.5 and demonstrate to them the problems that continue to cause me to lose time. Each new revision of JAWS carries the hope of resolution for past problems, and admittedly some bugs are fixed. However I've had issues with Outlook and Excel that have remained over the last three major (11, 12, 13) revisions. And unfortunatley it's not just a matter of rolling back to 9 (10 was a real pig, in my opinion). Going back that far means that I'll have issues with the current operating system, IE, and Office suite. So I must move forward with the times and JAWS revisions. I know that keeping up with all the mainstream applications is a big job for FS, but I sense that if there were just one major revision (would have to be JAWS 15) that *did not* add any new features, but rather was a concerted effort to fix all bugs back to Windows 98, IE6, and Office 2003, it would be a much bigger benefit to me. I would be willing to sacrifice an SMA for a revision with no new bells and whistles. I would be very happy to have my issues addressed and if not resolved, at least acknowledged that they are being worked on. So I ask you Freedom Scientific, to consider marketing customer good-will on version 15 rather than trying to load more goodies on to a platform that's beginning to crumble at the foundation. Thank you for listening.Flag

Name: Emma on Oct 4, 2012Comments: I love Jaws but I completely agree with this petition and feel that Freedom must listen to their customers instead of trying to do what they think is right. Pissing your customers off is not right and yes, we pay a lot of money for Jaws so we need to be heard. Bugs need to be addressed and Freedom Scientific must take note and help people where necessary.Flag

Name: Jennifer Piening on Oct 4, 2012Comments: I was very unhappy with the difficulties I've had with getting my Handy Tech Braille display to function properly with JAWS 13, because Freedom Scientific had to implement driver signing. We circulated a petition then, which I signed, and still, you implemented the policy anyway. Please listen to us now! I'm using the beta, and my Braille display is listed in the setup, so it is working wonderfully, and I hope that when the next version comes out, the Handy Tech Braille Star 80 will be listed again among the Braille displays. Otherwise, I am seriously going to have to consider giving up buying SMA's when I have to go back to version 12 to get my display to work with JAWS. It's not like I can just discard a Braille display like a worn out pair of shoes. It cost $10,000, and I need it to function at work as well as at home.Flag
