Name: Brendan Murray on May 15, 2010Comments: Some of the actions of animals are not quite what one expects: pointing this out is not something that deserves any kind of sanction, particularly when the victim has been exonerated of any wrong-doing. Professor Murphy's action undermines the entire Irish education system: he should resign, after an abject apology.Flag

Name: Peter M Carlton on May 15, 2010Comments: If Dr Evans was found not guilty of harassment, then sanctioning him can only be the result of someone's risk/benefit analysis. I suggest recalculating with more weight added to the risk of demonstrating to the world that UCC is not committed to academic freedom.Flag

Name: Nina on May 15, 2010Comments: As a university student I find it appalling and frightening that such ridiculous measures are taken against professors when they are simply pursuing intellectual discussion and debate. I also find it strange that the colleague who reported Dr. Evans did it solely on the basis that the article was "upsetting". Are we only allowed to use comforting, soothing articles in debate now? Science is not meant to comfort us, it is meant to further our knowledge and understanding of the world. Debate is a healthy and normal part of that. Please, for the love of science, stop stifling academic discussion.Flag

Name: Fred Price on May 15, 2010Comments: academic freedom for all!!!! its just bats, prof murphy should just get over it and start acting like responsable adult, honestly, i mean it, the opposition argument sounds like primary school bullying. the fact is, dylan evans did absolutely nothing wrong, and he should not be ounished for that. it was, after all, advancing our knowledge of the world, and no educated person could rationally disagree with that.Flag

Name: Jon Berg-Backelind on May 15, 2010Comments: "We find the harsh treatment of Dr Evans to be an explicit threat to intellectual discourse and academic freedom at UCC. Unless Professor Murphy reverses his unwise decision, academic staff at UCC will have to fear that if they show a peer-reviewed, scientific article to a colleague, which that colleague finds even mildly upsetting, then they will be punished, even if it is explicitly established by outside Investigators that there is no intention to cause offence." What happened? Why do we need to petition for academic freedom? This is all backwards!Flag

Name: Richard Rimington on May 15, 2010Comments: I can't begin to understand the mentality of creating a system where academic staff will be afraid to show objective scientific articles to each other for fear of 'upsetting' someone and receiving sanctions. What's more, he was completely exonerated. Some people seem to struggle to know what that word means. Surely this is madness?Flag

Name: Dr. S. Killings on May 15, 2010Comments: The sanctions against Dr. Evans are entirely without merit. Academic discourse requires the free exchange of ideas, no matter how unsettling or challenging they might be. The proper course of action for the offended party is to publish their own study that refutes the claims of the article, or outlines the reasons for their offense. This administrative action short-changes public debate and stifles, not encourages, all debate on the matter.Flag

Name: Clifford Gliddon on May 15, 2010Comments: It is unsupportable for someone in an administrative position to enforce arbitrary moral codes over others in any environment. Further, the academic environment needs to be one of uncovering and disseminating factual information for others to consider. Attempting to hide reality is absurd, and you show yourself to be a rube, Mr. Murphy.Flag

Free spech seems to be busy sucking the President's cock to complain about this disaster. Why aren't we shouting more about this. Academic work is being stifled all because some toffee nosed prudish twat, who it seems is working in a similar area to Dr. Evans, couldn't handle the idea of fruit bats blowing each other. IT HAPPENS. DEAL WITH IT. But don't go complaining of fucking sexual harrasment when someone proves you wrong. Someone's clearly a sore loser.Flag

Name: Chris Heath on May 15, 2010Comments: This is ridiculous, I really can't see what he did wrong and would hate for academic freedom to be stifled everytime someone doesn't like something, but doesn't state any offense at the time. Surely this could just be used as a way to avoid findings which don't mesh with your preconceptions. If you want someone to stop doing something, speak up, otherwise how else can they change their behaviour accordingly?Flag
