Comments: There are so many people (even in academia - like postmodernists) making absurd claims. This is reasonable behaviour on the part of the professor to justify the very legitimate claim that humans are animals.

Comments: Dylan may be a combative and energetic debater, but that should not stop his right to academic freedom. Surely this is an over-reaction to an offence taken but not even mentioned at the time? Natural justice would suggest a simple apology for any offence taken should be sufficient!

Comments: I admit my knowledge of the specifics of the case are limited to what I have read in Dr. Evans plea, but should my take on this be correct, it seems to be wholly absurd, egregious and unfair. Science is, by it's very definition, devoid of emotional persuasion and rather concerned solely with factual qualitative and quantitive information. The entire purpose of science, as is my understanding, is the study of the world around us. Should the topic of study conflict with human tastes I find this to be entirely trivial. I would liken this incident to a doctor filing a complaint because a colleague had shown him a particularly gruesome abscess. I'm familiar with Dr. Evans work and am saddened to see this unnecessary and unfair blight placed on his career. I am connected directly with UCC and feel enbarrassed and ashamed. Professor Murphy would do well to understand that when making decisions like this, he is representing every staff member and student of the institution and I feel quite perturbed to be associated with such a stance.

Comments: So the discourse at a university is to be determined by the sensitivity of the most prudish, most vindictive members of the culture? Goodbye open discussion of ideas, hello climate of fear.

Comments: The actions of Professor Michael Murphy are ridiculous, and run contrary to everything that is important in education and science. That someone finds a science article "upsetting" is not grounds for imposing "a two year period of intensive monitoring and counselling" on the person who showed them it!

Comments: The policies at UCC clearly need rethinking if the notion of harassment can be diluted to homeopathic levels. Not only does this damage Dr Evans, it also undermines the rights of those who are truly harassed by making a mockery of the term.

Comments: This is a very troubling action taken by an institution which of all places ought to be defending academic freedom and not incentivising offense-taking individuals. Even worse, the college's actions have a potential damaging effect on this person's academic career way out of proportion to any alleged damage done to the person taking initial offence. I hope you will reconsider you decision.
