On December 4th 2009 Amanda Knox was the victim of a grave miscarriage of justice when she was convicted of murder in Perugia, Italy. Ever since her arrest and trial, this case has been hotly disputed. The initial investigation left a lot to be desired with the evidence collected highly questionable. The evidence presented at the trial cannot be said to have proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, characterised as it was by numerous fundamental flaws. Procedural errors during the investigation renders the evidence against Amanda Knox unreliable and in many cases inadmissible yet it was still allowed into the trial and accepted without being subject of the adequate scrutiny that would have shown its failings and led to justice being served. Nor can the trial be said to have been fair. It was held in a climate of hostility fuelled by prejudicial media reporting from which the jury were not protected. From the outset Amanda was portrayed as guilty in the media even before the evidence had been considered by the court which must have had a bearing on the mindset of the jurors as they considered their verdict. She walked into that courtroom considered guilty regardless of the evidence. The principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is sacrosanct in any legal system. The legal system cannot work in a fair and equitable manner without this basic foundation stone. In this case that principle was compromised and subsequently the verdict passed at that trial must be considered unsafe. Amanda Knox has already spent three years unjustly imprisoned for an offence she did not commit. Jail is an unpleasant place even for the guilty, imagine how unbearable it must be when you know you are innocent. This is an injustice that cannot go unchallenged. If we see something we know to be wrong, we all have a moral obligation to speak out and challenge it, otherwise we ourselves become a part of that injustice. If we stand by and do nothing, an innocent girl will spend the next 23 years in a foreign prison cell far away from her family and friends. It is time put the wrong right, time to bring to an end her inhumane suffering and bring her back home to her family where she belongs. The facts of this case and the evidence upon which it is based are in the public domain. Please visit www.friendsofamanda.org or any other of the numerous websites containing details of this case, and examine the evidence for yourself. Then put yourself the place of a juror in this trial. Ask yourself if you could honestly declare that you believe the case against Amanda Knox to have been proven beyond reasonable doubt, and that you could, with a clear conscience, pass a verdict of guilty knowing it would condemn her to twenty six years of imprisonment. If you are unable to do that then your verdict must be one of Not Guilty, in which case I would implore you to support the appeal against the conviction by signing the following petition. Thank You. We, the undersigned, believing Amanda Knox to be innocent of the charges made against her, support her appeal against conviction and call for her release from her wrongful imprisonment.
