Tell NHL commissioner Gary Bettman that policy must be amended so that when a player, in this case Slava Voynov, gets in trouble with the law, the entire team is not punished by having that player's contract count against the salary cap. In response to pleas by Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi for policy changes to address this situation, Bettman responded, "Every team has to manage its salary cap, right? It's just the way it works." We signees of this petition assert that his reasoning is BS. The situation with Voynov is not a salary cap management issue. It is an NHL policy issue. When players are suspended for other criminal acts such as drug and steroid use, their salaries do not count against the cap. Dean Lombardi should not have to build in a salary cap cushion for the possibility that a player may be charged with a criminal act other than the use of illegal substances. This situation has already caused the kings to play with less than the standard 18 skater roster because calling-up or signing a replacement would put them over the salary cap. The team and their fans should not be punished for the alleged wrong doing of one person. This is not a salary cap management issue. This is an NHL policy issue. Fix it!
