The Region of Waterloo needs to take action to decrease the negative affect of traffic noise on residents in the Franklin/Myers area of Galt, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. Increased traffic noise along the Franklin/Myers corridor has left residents with: 1. decreased home values due to traffic noise, 2. increased heating/cooling bills caused by an inability to open windows due to traffic noise, 3. poor health due to pollution and an inability to sleep at night and, 4. an inability to enjoy peace and/or socializing in their backyards. The Region of Waterloo has re-routed traffic from Dundas St. to Myers Road/Franklin Boulevard due to construction on Dundas St. They have refused to consider the negative impact of the increased traffic noise on local residents because they consider it a short-term project. However, 8 months is a long time for local residents to suffer from the negative affects of increased traffic noise. The Region of Waterloo needs to consider options for noise reduction for residents in the Franklin/Myers area of Galt. In the long-term, the Region of Waterloo has plans to extend Franklin Boulevard to a "South Boundary Road", which will connect Highway 8 to Highway 24. This will alleviate traffic on Myers Road, but traffic along Franklin Boulevard will increase with commuters and truck drivers using Franklin Boulevard as the easiest/quickest route to get to businesses and industry located at the north end of Franklin Boulevard. The Region has completed a preliminary noise assessment which they have stated indicates no need for noise reduction strategies to be implemented. They have no current plans to consult with residents about the negative impact of this plan on local residents. The residents of East Galt (Cambridge), Myers Road/Franklin Boulevard area, respectfully petition the Region of Waterloo to take immediate action to implement strategies to reduce traffic noise along Franklin Boulevard and Myers Road in the short and long-term.
