Petition to Keep Fort Independence Park unlocked

TO: NYC Department of Parks NYPD 50th Precinct FROM: Residents of Kingsbridge Heights in the vicinity of Fort Independence Park RE: Fort Independence Park DATE: June 2008 Since October 24, 2007, Fort Independence Park has remained unlocked at night, at the request of people in the local community and Community Board 8\'s Parks Committee. We sign this petition to support keeping the park unlocked because: We want to be able to enjoy the park in the early evening hours and the early morning hours. We want PEP officers, police officers and neighbors to be able to walk through the park when it is officially closed to ensure that illegal activities aren\'t taking place. It should not be locked because the locked gates only keep out the police. Vandals and criminals can easily climb over the gates.

The Fort Independence Park Neighborhood Association is a community group dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of life for residents of our historic community.

7 years ago Comments: I have previously emailed CB8 directly and stated that for those of us who work in other areas of the city and in Westchester, it is bound to become a major problem exercising, or just taking a walk and a breather before and after work, especially as the days get shorter. I am sure many more people are in the same boat, with long commutes and no place to walk or sit outside after work. Please keep our park open. It has been a tremendous boost to the community to have it available all the time. It has also cut down on accidents with kids hanging out on the street as they have a place to play and the adults know where they are. With the community activities expanded in this way and good neighbours always around, the place has become safer, despite earlier concerns! It's common sense - everyone benefits!
