Currently utilities in Maine produce 10% of their new energy from renewable sources. If this bill succeeds it will mean that Maine's ultilities will have increase that 20%. The bill won't stipulate a type of energy source, only that the ultilities produce 20% of their new energy from renewable, clean sources and that the energy is at an equal or lesser expense than the nonrenewable energy that they are currently producing. These utilities would have until 2020 to do this. (So it won't hurt the economy, they have eight years.) The bill also lessens the amount of "red tape" they'd have to deal with in order to build energy sources. I understand that if this all works out, gets voted in next year, then we will be able to decide, as a state, what forms of renewable energy that our new energy comes from- this is because so many problems are being associated with Wind Energy.Whether or not you believe that there is any legitamcy to those fears, many people don't want more Wind Farms. Apparently these renewable energies could easily from Tidal power, among other things.
