These would negatively impact their security, social development, and level of learning. I believe that reorganizing the entire district is not in the best interest of the students. I further believe that Hughes needs to be critically evaluated and scientifically proven as successfully improved prior to changing all of the variables and eliminating the ability to measure any improvement.Flag

Name: Jennifer Rupp on Jan 22, 2013Postal Address: 519 N. Madison St.Comments: I am not in favor of changing the current grade structure at the elementary school level. I feel very strongly that the transitions being recommended are not appropriate for early elementary school children. I do not wish to have my family separated between buildings thus, limiting my ability to be as actively involved with their school activities. I would like to see more research that proves this is a successful model and will save the district significantly. I would like to see other alternatives researched and reported on before this recommendation is voted upon.Flag

I the school were to be reorganized, each of our children would attend a different elementary school and one of our children would have to transition 2 years in a row as he is currently in 2nd grade.Flag

Plus, I am not convinced that the cost benefits will be there especially with all the upfront costs that will be incurred.Flag

Name: Sara Valentine on Jan 23, 2013Postal Address: 423 Allen Rd.Comments: Personally, having my kids separated in 3 different buildings while going from kindergarten to 5th grade is very unnecessary. Working for a district with grade level buildings two (k-3) and one (4-5) seems to be less transitions, however, the district has lost several families due to this new configuration. We have children miss the bus more frequently-you will have to bus more kids who could otherwise have gone to their home school, creating more of a deficit for Marshall. I have sadly spoken to many families and they are planning to enroll their kids into Marlee or Marshall academy. Another downside of the new configuration is the lack of security and consistency from year to year and among buildings. If we lose too many families ($$$), the district will lose dollars.Flag

Like I don't have enough going on as it is. Putting the money concerns before the concern of our children is quite disturbing. Nothing productive will come from this. If anything, you will lose many students, including mine. Our family has made the decision to start homeschooling if this goes through. Please think of your students and their families, and don't screw this up!Flag

Name: Angie DeCola on Jan 23, 2013Postal Address: 413 Allen Place, 49224Comments: I am deeply opposed to the proposed reconfiguration of Marshall Public Elementary Schools. Along with my own very strong instincts about this plan, every study I have read details the many negative effects of this disruptive reorganization. Every study shows that the social, cognitive, psychological impacts of so many unnecessary transitions for our young children will be deep, negative, and many, including (but surely not limited to) decreased academic performance, increased stress and anxiety, loss of identity, loss of community, not to mention the impact on the families, who will be divided, at times, between three separate schools. My first-grade daughter learns from her older peers at Walters, she actively interacts with younger and older children to the benefit of all. She is part of a community, and feels that, and expresses her joy at that nearly daily. She knows the teachers she will have down the line and already interacts with them now. She feels very much a part of the community at Walters, and her comfort and ease there gives me comfort and ease. I look very much forward to sending my second daughter, three years younger than my oldest, to Walters with her big sister when the time comes. The School Board should familiarize themselves with the numerous studies showing the deleterious effect of multiple transitions for young children. The School Board needs to conduct through investigations of their own, with the goal of preserving the current arrangement and improving it within that arrangement before they even consider the idea of dismantling our current educational system. Our children's future success and happiness depend on this.Flag

Name: Karen Odette on Jan 24, 2013Postal Address: 10121 14 1/2 mile road marshallComments: I know that the school district has to make some changes, but I do not feel this would be the way to go. First cuts need to come in the form of administration. Some people need to be let go that are not doing an effective job. Union City received a grant for i-pad, computers and other devises for each student, Why hasn't Marshall Public School done this. You keep spending money on more building when it is the educational things that the money should be spend on. Having good athletic programs such as football and wrestling, but without a good educational base people will not come for a fancy looking building. The elementary level kids do not need to bused to different school. This does not help that problem. Hiring good effective teachers will bring people to your schools. Some kids as well as my nephew that left one school to attend another will probably be put back into a school/environment that is not suited and does not work for them, hence why they left the school and or areas. I am very displeased that the board feels it a plus to put its students last by making bigger class sizes. Better teachers and less administration needs to happen, not moving students.Flag

I understand budget cuts as well as being fiscally responsible, but you also have a responsibility to serve your students and their families in the best way. I see no benefit for a child to move buildings every two years. I do not believe that the children or families of Marshall Public Schools will benefit from this concept. If such a change occurs, my family will certainly be looking elsewhere for our children's future education.Flag
