We , the undersigned, as Residents of Putnam Valley, Kent, and Putnam County, hereby affix our signature to protest the planned renovation of Peekskill Hollow Road. Whereas this plan was done without required public input, and in spite of our expressions on multiple occasions of our opposition to the planned changes to this road, and Whereas we have been repeatedly assured that these changes would not take place, and Whereas the planned changes have not been justified by either the condition of the road or the accident history, and Whereas the invasiveness of the plan will significant the historical and aesthetic aspects of the road--notably stone walls and trees, and Whereas the materials which are planned for use will negatively affect the physical environment abutting and near the road--notably drinking water and animal habitats, and Whereas property values will be negatively affected by this plan, and Whereas multiple scores of homeowners will have encroachment into their yards by the planned 4 foot shoulders, and Whereas research has shown that when roads are widened--whether by increasing travel lanes or shoulders--speeds increase and lead to higher accident rates, and Whereas supporters of this plan have misled the public about the accident history of this road in order to substantiate their claim that the road needs to be changed for "safety reasons", We, the undersigned, are demanding the following: 1. The present demonstrated safety record of Peekskill Hollow Road be maintained by preserving its current footprint. Any changes to the road be limited to maintenance alone, and not include any widening, straightening, or addition of shoulders. Any any changes be justified specifically by engineers, this professionally generated justification be presented to the public. 2. The County designate Peekskill HollowRoad as an historic road, and write a local law, similar to that written by North Salem town, which will protect this and other historic places in Putnam and in our towns.
