An achievable goal: Reaching the goal of food self-sufficiency for the island of Kauai, will require that we substantially reduce the island's 90% dependence on imported food by employing various means to increase local food production. Each step toward food self-sufficiency will not only reduce the negative impact on our island resulting from the growing food crisis world-wide, it will also enrich the local economy with dollars spent on locally grown food rather than on the food imported from other regions of the world. As the world's food supply is being seriously threatened, it is time for Kauai to assume responsibility for its own needs.
