| 863 | Steven Henkelman | President Brodhead stated that Duke will become stronger as a result of this episode. Such a prediction comes from a president who refused to meet with the parents of the lacrosse players last March. This from a president who condoned police entry of the dorm of two lacrosse players, without a search warrant, to question the players without known legal representation present. This from a president who inflamed an already intense atmosphere by subordinating all reference to "innocent until proven guilty" below headline statements about the horrific nature of the alleged crimes. This from a president who condoned the public abuse of Duke students and Duke campus life by (now) over 100 faculty members. This from a president who was willing to allow the notorious arms bearing New Black Panthers to march on campus and physically confront the lacrosse players. This from a president who failed to speak out against the threats targeted at the lacrosse players, but deemed it important to speak out against those who made disparaging comments to the most outspoken of the Group of 88 faculty. This from a president who made public statements conveying a lack of cooperation by the lacrosse players while having personal knowledge of the willingness of lacrosse players to speak at length to the police, offer DNA and lie detector testing and assist the police in the search of their residence, all without legal representation. This from a president who, without any factual evidence in hand, forced the resignation of a respected16-year coach, who, less than a year earlier, was rewarded by Duke with a new multi-year contract. This from a president who, when faced with the choice, selected the outrageous public statements of the District Attorney over the statements of innocence made directly to him by the captains of the lacrosse team. This from a president who chose a strategy of "damage control" for Duke's good name over support of forty-six student athletes it had felt strongly enough about just a few years earlier to recruit into the Duke family. This from a president who hid behind no fewer than five hastily appointed committees last spring, the last of which to report, the Campus Culture Initiative, prejudiciously structured with three of its four subcommittees headed by members of the Group of 88 faculty.
Duke may eventually become stronger from this episode as President Brodhead predicted, but, should that occur, it will not be because of its current administrative and Board leadership, or because of 88+ faculty members driven by their own agendas. Should Duke become stronger, it will be because of the strength of faculty members like James Coleman of the Law School and those of the Economics department and Women's Lacrosse Coach Kimel who had the strength of character to step forward and speak out against the unconscionable abuse of forty-six Duke student athletes. |

| 870 | helene kraus | I am greatly concerned and would appreciate additional information on the process of electing the chair of the Academic Council. Reading the latest news, I do not forsee an end to this ridiculous hoax. Afaculty member who attended Duke and has strong ties to the University was passed over for a member of the unfamous faculty group? Incredible! |
