| 658 | Anonymous | . . .still waiting to see if the University's follow-up is to be more than PR spin. . .
Perhaps I should have made that "the *corporate* University".... you know, the people who took three years to "respond" on community questions about the Central Campus expansion. |

| 660 | Steven R McCoy MD | It has been gratifying to see support from some memebers of the faculty after the slurs from the "gang of 88" |
| 661 | David Nickum | I am pleased to see members of the Duke faculty stepping forward to support the due process that should be accorded to students. The faculty that I recall fondly from my days at Duke (early 1990s) demanded a critical evaluation of facts to support one's arguments, whatever argument that might be. It is disappointing to see 88 members of the current faculty so ready to disregard facts and jump to conclusions based on ideology alone. Thank you to the Economics professors who have spoken up and shown that those 88 voices do not reflect the view of all (or I hope even most) of Duke's faculty. |

| 664 | Anonymous | I am a faculty member at Duke, and like many have watched in horror as events unfolded over the past year.
When I was in graduate school, preparing for the ritual hazing of the oral exam that would determine whether I progressed to become a doctoral candidate, a wise senior graduate student gave me a key piece of advise. “The purpose of orals,” he said, “is to determine if you know the difference between what you know and what you don’t know.” I took this to mean that as a would-be scholar, I would be called upon to justify my beliefs with testable evidence. One would think that this is true of all areas of scholarship, although it appears to be more ingrained in disciplines that depend upon empirical evidence subject to hypothesis-testing.
While it is true that one group of faculty rushed to judgment, the vast majority of faculty members I have spoken to recognized within days of the alleged crime that the facts were shifting and the evidence of a crime weak. (Those of us old enough sensed echoes of the Tawana Brawley incident). We applauded Professor Baldwin’s and the Econ faculty’s bold statements of support for our cherished students. I have numerous male and female lacrosse players in my classes and have always found them to be conscientious, engaged students. I have let them know personally that I am available to help them in any way I can through this ordeal, and they seem to appreciate that support. I want parents to know that I am but one of the majority of faculty members providing this kind of personal support.
With some misgivings, I choose to post this message anonymously. The reason is that I feel I can be more effective if I am not a lightning rod. in helping the students now, and in helping with the inevitable reconciliation that must take place among faculty, students and the community in the time to come. |

| 667 | Gary H. Stroy | The "Group of 88", like M. Nifong, egregiously used the LAX incident to support their own personal agendas. They should either apologize or be asked to resign from Duke. |

| 670 | Anonymous | The end of the criminal case for the 3 falsely accused is hopefully in sight but the legal bills for the families have already exceeded 3 MILLION DOLLARS. Up to this point the Duke administration has not publicly announced that they are providing any financial assistance to the families despite Nifong's blatant misconduct. Thus, if you have not already done so, please consider making a donation to the legal defense fund for the falsely accused via the "Association for Truth and Fairness" website (www.truthandfairness.org). Maybe Duke supporters should stop donating to the Duke Annual Fund until the Duke administration formally apologizes for its "presumption of guilt" based actions in response to this case. |

| 677 | Anonymous | Thanks very much to the Economics faculty who had the courage to stand up and do the right thing.
Let the facts of this case speak for themselves and then let the healing begin. No more rushing to judgment at Duke or in Durham, please. |

| 681 | Frank Soprrell | A great counter to the leftist of the Duke faculty, some of whom want athletic scholarships abolished. They seem not to realize that Duke is in the South, not the Northeast. |
| 682 | John W. van Wert | I am extremely concerned that the proper legal channels are followed so as not to allow this kind of terrible prejudgement. |
| 683 | Joel Janney | My reluctance to sign this petition is due to the language "We join with President Broadhead". I do not join with President Broadhead, who has and continues to do harm to the university through a glaring absence of leadership, compounding his original errors of judgement. There are things that can be said, and done, that would not cause further harm to Duke's position in the lawsuits soon to come.
Of course the DA and law enforcement need to suffer the consequences of their actions. Thank you to these faculty for standing up for what's right.
It would be helpful to know how many members of Duke faculty, in addition to the 19 who published the letter, have signed this petition. |

| 687 | Charles H. Lochmüller | I agree that the matter of impropriety by Durham law enforcement and the State District Attorney must be investigated. I also feel, and have felt since day one, that the Duke reaction was wrong. We fired a winning coach for not controlling his team's non-sport activities yet we disowned in loco parentis 30 years ago. We assumed our students were guilty and denied them the presumption of innocence. As individuals we need not condone their juvenile vision of party entertainment but we owe them better treatment. |

| 689 | Anonymous | I support the brave Economics faculty who raised the questions the Duke university leaders have been afraid to raise for so long. The lack of university leadership has already cost the wrongfully accused students and their families a very rough year. The very least that the university can do now is sueing the DA office to compensate the student's legal fees and have it advertise the student's innocence. It is extremely important that the Duke University officials do that, not only to defend the wrongfully accused students, but also to save the university face and prevent similar extortion attempts in the future. |
