FLat Head suyndrome is called Deformational Plagiocephaly and is an asymmetric moulding of the head caused by external forces. It can be caused by an number of factors, such as the birth process, position in the womb and often the infants preferred sleeping position. It can also be caused by a condition called torticollis where there is a tightening in the muscles on either side of the neck that flex the head, tilt it towards the affected side and rotate the face to the opposite side. When one of these muscles are tight it causes the baby to sleep with the head on one side, this is when the head tends to flatten. The entire side of the head, including the ear, moves forward and in many cases, there is a bulging of the forehead on the same side. The severity of this can be reduced by careful and continuous attention to repositioning the baby when both awake and asleep but if this is not helping a cranial remoulding orthosis will bring the head back to better symetry and shape as the head grows. When i brought this to the attention of my doctors and other health professionals i was told that this problem would correct itsself, which it hasnt. i was not given any information about what procedures there are avavilabe or what i could do to help . My child is now 15 months old and it may be too late to help sort this problem as the procedures should be started when she was a baby. This along with osteopathy are the only things that can help and both are not available on the National Health as it is classed as a cosmetic problem. Most families with children cannot afford to spend over £2000 plus travelling expenses to have these procedures carried out, so our children are suffering because of this. This petition is to say we sould be informed of Flat head syndrome by Health professionals when our children are born and the help we need to corret this should be available on the National Health System as it affects our childrens lives.
