BethFunding for services in our area should take into account our high summer population. But who should pay for this? Should it be the locals? Tourism is important to Cornwall but many here work for minimum wage (in the tourism industry...). I wonder how many local people really profit from tourism given that second homes and businesses aren't always locally owned. Or should essential services be nationally funded? Similarly health care funding reflects our permanent population which doesn't help our struggling hospitals. Cornwall often seems to be considered very rural (is this because we are over an hours drive from London?) but its nothing like a true rural area (e.g. the HIghlands).
Geoffrey HeathcockThere is no doubt that Cornwall faces very difficult financial situation, however after 14 years on a Fire Authority and 30 odd years association with Cornwall, I have no doubt whatsoever, that the protection of your citizens and the the enhanced population due to the tourism industry means after this tragedy, very serious re-thinking of a cuts package by the Council has to be undertaken, you simply dont play with lives, you simply dont take unacceptable risks with fire cover - to that end how was it at the height of the summer - both specialist aerial ladder platforms were not available and a standby machine not provided from a manufacturer or neighbouring Brigade whilst they were 'off the run' Geoffrey Heathcock Cambridgeshire
Alan VernallsIn view of the latest tradgedy is it not time that spare Turntable Ladders and Airal Ladder Platforms were made available as well as the resiliance appliances that were moved around the country when the floods came. Instead of constantly recruiting civilian main grade staff in to Police and Fire Service Posts an effort should be made to cover the operational commitments that occur without warning. Each week we are reading about another major blaze that was beyond saving due to shortage of manpower and appliances. We dont need nine new regional controls, we need better Fire and Rescue cover in the Rural Areas. Alan Vernalls, London
J NewtonThe likes of Nick Raynsford,John Prescott and the Chief Fire Officers who gave support to the senseless 'modernisation' plans for the fire services of this country should hang their heads in shame! Wholetime fire cover at night is essential in areas where there is seasonal high population hotel risks. For anyone who calls for cut backs and money saving in these areas lacks both common sense and knowledge of the fire risk threat. I just hope that again, lessons have been learned! J Newton, Lincolnshire
Frances N ClaridgeThe fire service is an essential safety facility and cannot be the subject of financial cutbacks. Frances N Claridge, Topsham, Devon

Jan GoldinfThere should never be any cuts in fire cover, savings sjould be made in County Council offices first. Stop putting people lives in danger

Heather MassieWill this make the council think about the people in Cornwall and cut back on their expenses, probably not, they should be ashamed of thmselves!

Barbara FitzwaterIt's an absolute disgrace that proper 24 hour fire service cover is not available in Cornwall. Get it sorted or you'll lose a lot of holiday trade. I and my family will be checking on fire service provision before holidaying in the county again.

Julie SibleyWhat a horrible weekend for Newquay, my heart goes out to those affected from the fire. Maybe the council will sit up and listen and scrap the cuts before something else terrible happens to Cornwall!!!
Louise SandallThe tragedy in Newquay has highlighted the sheer insanity of implementing these cuts. Do those councillors who vote for fire service reduction yet seem happy to spend on trivia like self-promoting magazines and free bottled water for employees sleep at night with a clear conscience? If they do, then I despair of human nature.
C.A. SandallThe human tragedy of the Newquay fire is colossal - and could be horribly easily repeated. The proposed cuts focus on Camborne and Falmouth - which not only have sizeable populations but also important industrial sites, not least Cornwall's major shipyard! To reduce the protection that the Fire Service gives, to people and to the industries on which Cornwall depends, goes so far beyond foolishness that words to describe it fail me! ngines Not to cover
Verity RichardsThe retained service in Cornwall is A1, if you can recruit, retain and get enough cover. Perhaps if all our retained were offered the wholetime jobs and you had to have at least 2 years experience as a retained firefighter before you could train to be a wholetime firefighter (rather than just having a degree in who knows what) we would have a full retained service and really well trained and experienced wholetime staff!
thomas davieswe seem to have less firefighters than we did in 1920

WayneI marched in Truro in support of my colleagues in Cornwall. Fire service cuts have been and always will be an accident waiting to happen. I fire and rescue services the length and breadth of the country have been cut to the bone. If any good comes of the tragedy in Newquay it is that these cuts have stirred the British public. Shame on CCC.
judy studleyits all very well for the powers at bee`s but its the lads on the ground who have to deal with it

Anonymouswe pay for a 24/7 emergency service please provide us with a competent one.
Anne LawIt is imperative that the fire service is not reduced. Cutting costs cost lives, as this recent event has just proved. Retained stations are not acceptable, although they provide a wonderful service full-time stations are the only acceptable answer.
Peter SyderI read with great concern that only one appliance could initially be sent to this disaster. It unfortunately points again to the value of life against the cost of protecting and saving life. Its so easy for so many to discuss costs in a meeting, but its a damn sight harder to go into a burning building or approach a serious accident to save people. You just pray the cost cutters never need the services themselves. I would certainly be worried for my family as I am sure many others will be at this time
AnonymousThis county needs a far better fire service with 24 hr cover by full time, active fire personel. Investment from CCC Scrap this non effective self assessment process and lets get back to fire inspections by personel who know what they are doing Cornwall was shown to be ineffective this time, next time an old peoples home? childrens nursery? or a school?

Karen DaveyAs a wife of a retained firefighter in Cornwall, I wholly support the WMN campaign to urge County Hall to scrap the cuts and invest in the Cornwall Fire Brigade.
Firefighter Kelly Bourne LincolnshireStop closing stations down and reducing nightime cover, if members of your family needed help and there were no-one available you would be the first to moan. Its about time the government and local authorities stop wasting taxpayers money on c**p and used it what it should be used for.!!! Why should taxes go up and fire, police, ambulances be cut all the time, this has got to stop before more lives are lost, next time it could be someone close to you.

Lynne WoodwardI worked all Friday night with these people and although the Fire Brigade did a wonderful job, they shouldn't have to struggle. What cost a persons life? Stop the budget cuts please.
david wallacethe council should not be allowed to put peoples lives at risk by cutting back on essential services like 24 hour fire cover for the whole county of cornwall. they should be held accountable for every death and serious injury their stupid cutbacks are to blame for.
Tony WhiteCCC should spend money where it is needed and stop wasting money on Politically Correct claptrap.

Robin EdmondsDevon requires more, not less, coverage from the local fire services whos current resources are clearly over streached.

JULIA DAVEYThis must be stopped, we need a full time fire service, especially in the summer months when the population swells to more than double. it also seems very bad management to have all the tun-table ladders out of actionat the same time!
