Presently the economy is having some negative effects on the funding public universities receive each year. Unfortunately, the University of California, Irvine is not exempt, and every department, including the Cognitive Sciences, is being forced to cut non-tenured faculty accordingly. To the misfortune of psychology students, the Cognitive Science department has elected to discharge Dr. Valerie L. Wright from her position as a lecturer, regardless of her thirteen year trajectory, meaning that she will no longer be teaching classes such as Psychology Fundamentals, Human Sexuality, Abnormal Psychology, and Clinical Psychology, which is known to have guided many students in choosing their career paths. It is important to note that the Clinical Psychology course is essential to all the students who wish to enter the field of psychology at the graduate level. This class is specifically targeted at all the students that want to pursue careers in Clinical Psychology as therapists and clinicians. Without the wealth of information, projects, and lectures that Dr. Wright offers, it is very probable that more students will be ill prepared to apply, and even more importantly, succeed in graduate school. Dr. Wright is an inspiring mentor and a role model, both on a personal as well as professional level, to all of her students. She is the reason why many of us have chosen our particular careers, and have succeeded in graduate studies. Please help us by signing this petition against the removal of Dr. Wright from the Cognitive Sciences department, allowing her to gain the right to teach Clinical Psychology at UC Irvine. I agree that Dr. Wright should not be removed from teaching invaluable courses in the Cognitive Science Department.
