Name: Pauline Chamberlain on Apr 17, 2012Comments: The enactment of this law will only serve to ensure that hundreds maybe thousands of dogs will be destroyed or abandoned to no good end since this will NOT solve the problem. The issue is a lack of responsibility on the part of certain dog owners and we need legislation that will force them to uphold their duties not only to society but to the animals under their care.Flag

Name: Cathy Richmond on Apr 17, 2012Comments: Make owners more responsible for the safety and proper care of their animals in a proactive form not reactive. Promote education of the special needs of the various breeds and ensure that prospective owners meet the criteria to properly care for a pet ensuring its safety and that of the general public. Stop the view that dogs are money making property for breeding and safety equipment. Value must be given to life, ALL LIFE.Flag

I feed them, give them love and respect and in return they adore us all and protect us. It is humans who train dogs to be weapons of destruction and irresponsibly use these dogs to harm others as well as be a nuisance to the public - just like their owners!Flag

Comments: Why should the animals that we genetically altered to suit our selfish purposes be punished because we have lost control? Unfortunately people do not see the bigger picture. There are repercussions of this Breed Specific Law. People do not listen until they feel and once they feel that they can hide their dog away from the Government they think that they are okay. Also, for those who are actually panicking about the Law they may be as heartless and cruel to leave their animals out on the streets to fend for themselves. As the saying goes out of sight, out of mind. However, as a vet student I believe that we are responsible for these animals. We have domesticated them for our purposes in such a way that if let loose in the wild, they will surely suffer. These dogs are stereotyped in two ways (namely the Pitbulls).1) If you have a Pitbull no one can come into your yard and do you harm 2) Pitbulls are dangerous. With the latter, Pitbulls have attained the bad reputation because of the owners themselves. They have treated these dogs like machines. They are sentient animals and this includes feeling happy feeling sad just like we do. People have insisted on training these dogs for aggression when little do they realize all they need is obedience because when it comes down to a situation that needs it, these dogs will show their true colours and be aggressive when they have to do to protect their owner. These dogs are loyal to us, why can't we show loyalty to them? If you want to put in a law to control the situation there are other ways and other means of ensuring that these animals are properly secured. The people who are unable to control their dogs are the ones to blame. The Pits I've witnessed since seeing practice at the vet have been the sweetest dogs ever. It is essentially the owners to blame. In a sense it's almost like having a child. If you don't train the child properly of course the child will get out of hand. Also the methods in which I've seen people in a sense "train" their own dogs is a method to be used on children not on these animals. In conclusion, it is not fair for these dogs to pay for actions we ourselves have done in order to give the dog that reputation.Flag -
