He was always my favorite Cardinal because of his longevity on the team, his hussle, and being such a humble player. He really WILL always be remembered as a great Cardinal. #51 needs to be retired ASAP!Flag

Name: John Kopolow on Apr 11, 2006State:Country:Comments: Willie McGee can be given the rarest of compliments in the modern sports era -- he was a truly humble professional athlete. Late in his career he hit his first "walk-off" homerun. After rounding first base he raised his fist -- something many players do even after hitting a homerun that turns a 10-to-2 loss into a 10-to-3 loss. But after the game he apologized for his exuberance, saying he did not want do anything that might show-up the opposing team. To Willie, the team's success always mattered more than his own.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Apr 11, 2006State: NYCountry: USComments: Part of the reason the Cardinals have such great, loyal, and knowledgeable fans is that they had announcers like Jack Buck and Mike Shannon, and players like Willie McGee. He was a player you could like as well as admire. More than anyone else, he made you feel the weight and importance and responsibility of every at-bat, and at the same time the joy of being able to shoulder that responsibility. Retiring a player's number isn't something to be taken lightly, but Willie McGee is one of the few players who deserves this honor.Flag

Name: Daniel Swinford III on Apr 12, 2006State: MOCountry: USComments: This is a no brainer. In my generation, willie epitomised what cardinal baseball was, he loved to play ball and it showed. we've had lots of fan favorites, ie, hudler, hart, etc. willie was not only a fan favorite, he was a fans ballplayer and has the stats to show it, no flash in the pan was he. I cant imagine the new Busch being complete without #51 in the rafters. And does the word class count, well its in abundance.Flag

Why would we not retire the number of one of the true greats in the game as well as a gentleman who seemed to appreciate us as much as we appreciated him Retire 51-make sure he knows how much we loved all he did day after day and year after year without the now all too common theatrics that some players rely on.Flag
