Dear Mr. Murphy, In most of the rooms on the east side of the FEUSA building, especially the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors, the internet has been severely malfunctioning since Monday the 27th of May (completely unavailable in many rooms) and completely unavailable in all rooms since Saturday the 1st of June. Many people have reported this both to the reception desk and directly to the administration office. The feedback on the progress of repairs has been delayed, and the messages posted around the building have been confusing and incomplete. This problem has not been addressed efficiently. Some of us have been informed that the administration desk was not aware of the continuation of the problem, but this is probably a symptom that there needs to be increased communication between the residents and the direction, and intiation of this communication should not soley be the responsibility of the residents. Besides the fact that the internet is a service that is included in the rent we pay, the lack of this service is also an extreme inconvenience on a professional and personal level. It is possible to get internet in the library, but many residents use many books or work for many hours and require toilet and food breaks. For residents living on the upper floors, carrying materials or returning to the kitchen is an inconvenience and disrupts work flow. Residents that have part-time jobs or lab work during the day will also be tired. When writing a thesis or studying for exams, the internet service that we pay for is particularly vital. On a personal level, all of the residents in the building have close friends and family in foreign countries, often in very different time zones. While we all enjoy experiencing the Paris life, the contact with our family and loved ones is important for our quality of life. Skype is an important resource, as international calls can be very expensive. To make calls requires the privacy of a personal room. Some residents can make these calls from private study rooms in libaries or work places, but these buildings are closed at the hours when it most convenient to make international calls. Due to the lack of services and the inconvenience caused, the lodgers in the east side of the upper floors propose to pay 430 euros rent for the month of June, rather than 460 euros. We consider this proposal to be very reasonable, as a private monthly internet subscription typically cost 20 euros. Some residents have already stated that they will pay the June rent following the successful repair of the internet. For those who have already paid rent for the month of June, the reduction will be taken off of the July rent. We hope that the problem will be addressed soon. In addition, we hope that in the future the communication network between the residents and the administration will be improved. Email newsletters and on-line feedback forms are suggested methods of initiating this communication. Cordially,
