337 Mr. Norman R. BinnieThe return of a regular car ferry link between Mallaig and Lochboisdale would improve access to Uist for the local populations as well as being of great benefit to the tourist trade and commercial freight. There is great local support for this link as it is needed to reverse the trend in depopulation by supporting development of the local economy at both ends of the route. The link would also support the resurgence in Gaelic education, social and cultural affairs. The MacBrayne's car ferry Clansman launched in Aberdeen on 16th January 1964 used to make five trips from Mallaig to Lochboisdale but was withdrawn in 1974. It should also be remembered that David MacBrayne (1928) Limited's contract had an obligation to improve services to the outer isles with regard to passenger accommodation, lower fares and lower freight charges. With the proposed road equivalent tariffs and the impending completion of the Morar to Mallaig road it would be an opportune moment to reform this ferrry link, benefit local and wider communities and be an example of the new self confidence and understanding in Scotltish affairs.

341 Andrew CordellQuite apart from the convenience, there would be considerable environmental benefits from cutting out many road journeys between Fort William and Uig

346 Kenny BeatonI recently experienced the Lochboisdale-Oban route. A long 6-7 hour drive from Uig in Skye is not an option with a young baby. Currently there are only three ferries a week on this route. Also they *all* go via Barra first, adding 2 hours for South Uist passengers, making a 7.5 hour journey. I think somene recently described this is a '19th century ferry service'. The Mallaig option would help enormously, but it should not be at the expense of the Oban route.

349 hugh mackayit takes to long to go the lochboisdale way. 3.30 hours would make alot of difference.
