Comments: : I was very concerned to learn earlier this week that the Fenton Street Market in Downtown Silver Spring may be forced to close because of rising rental costs. This market is an integral part of the community and I urge you to offer an exception to this rate-hike for vendors. As an initial matter, the market generates revenue for neighboring businesses. People walk into town to pick up a present or produce – and end up staying on for lunch or a movie. Perhaps more importantly, the benefits of the market far exceed its financial benefits. The market serves as a wonderful community gathering space in Silver Spring. This meeting of neighbors in a public space is precisely why the Civic Center was built. It would be a real shame to do something that would prevent residents from benefiting from this resource. Please let me know if there are others I should write to express my support for the market.

Comments: Over and over again I read about something interesting, unique and important happening at the Fenton Street Market. As a vendor at FSM, and as a resident of Silver Spring, I find opportunities to meet other locals, share, and strengthen the bond of this community (which really needs it) that happen only in this kind of space. The great people behind this market have worked tirelessly to create this space, and the folks in Rockville owe it to themselves to see in person what a unique benefit FSM is to SS and to the outlying area. Don't rob us of this by hiking up the fees! Save Fenton Street Market and protect what is unique in Silver Spring! thank you, Michelle Sasscer

Comments: The county seems to have forgotten that the purpose of the civic building and its plaza is to serve the public interest. When a member of the community organizes an ongoing event that positively activates a public space and annually contributes $6.6 million to the local economy, she should be applauded and her efforts encouraged. That is what the greater Silver Spring community has done to support the Fenton Street Market. Now it’s the county government’s turn.

Comments: Our Montgomery County government has done many idiotic things in the past, like allowing the demolition of the historically designated (its doing) 1927 Maryland National Guard Armory on Wayne Avneue at Fenton Street in 1998. Please don't add pushing out the Fenton Street Market to your "legacy!"

Comments: Do not increase the fees!! We will pay now or later. Having people USE downtown Silver Spring reduces crime, increases quality of life for the residents and vendors and makes this area of the county a better place to live and thus brings in revenues through more sales, higher property taxes (as homes go up in value), more successful businesses, etc.

Comments: Dear County Government: Too often you subsidize growth and culture only to undercut it with outrageous user fees before it can finish the intended job of urban revitalization. You did the same thing with the Arts Alley and Parking fee increases. Please reconsider this onerous, exponential fee increase. Warmly, Brian Savoie

Comments: Since the Fenton Street Market opened at the civic center, i have made it a point to shop there and the farmer's market (and not the Takoma Park farmer's market on Sunday, like I used to) nearly every Saturday. I usually end up spending money in nearby stores as a result of the proximity and convenience. I love the fact that it draws so many people out and feels like a real event every Saturday. Why on earth MC wants to now ruin the community that is building as a result of the market is beyond me. The money generated by the huge flux of people to downtown SS for the market should more than make up for the fees on the civic plaza. Oh, and it is a "civic" plaza: meant to bring people together to share the community. This raise in fees and possible closing the market as a result seems completely antithetical to many of the purposes of the plaza in the first place. I urge MC to reconsider this fee increase and its impact on the larger community of Downtown Silver Spring.

Comments: I strongly support the continued presence of the Fenton Street Market as it provides a clear public benefit to the citizens of Silver Spring and Montgomery county and to surrounding businesses which benefit from the increased presence of shoppers. At the same time, the market does not earn sufficient revenues to support higher fees nor should it. The market itself is not set up to earn profits and therefore should not be charged additional fees.

Comments: Any effort to raise fees and shut down the Fenton Market are absurd. The market is a boost to the neighborhood economy. People go to the market to find neat things, spending their hard-earned dollars, and often go on to spend more money at nearby restaurants, the movie theater, other shops, etc. The market also gives mom-and-pop sellers the chance to generate sales they would not otherwise have the chance to make. Shame on the county for even considering the idea of forcing the Fenton Street Market to close.
