The Facility for Electron Microscopy Research can maximize occupancy of the available microscope time with a simple list server. Currently there is an online booking system that allows users to reserve a block of time for their use. Often, a user may anticipate arriving late or will leave early, without notifying other users that would be interested in taking up the newly available microscope time.
By implementing a list server, all current users would be
notified that the microscope is free. Applicable situations include
malfunctioning hardware, technicians that become occupied with a more pressing
matter, and simply needing less time on the microscope than anticipated. List
servers are free and require minimal maintenance. “Google groups” is one way to
allow users to notify each other. A list server would minimize unnecessary and
unknown microscope down-time and maximize user occupancy, leading to more billable hours.
