In 1948 the United Nations adopted the Declaration of Human Rights. Sixty years later of all these rights, Women's Rights are among the most neglected. This despite the fact that women all over the world have an important role in sustainable human development.
Drastic measures have to be taken to advance Women's Rights. This is urgent for the welfare of the women and for the sustainable development of the planet. The best way to guarantee Women's Rights and to further the sustainable development of the planet is to trust leadership to women on all levels of society.
In 2008 we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. In 2015 we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations. This gives the United Nations and all it's member states an 8 years period to take following actions on female leadership in order to promote Women's Right and sustainable development.
- to ensure that the next Secretary General of the UN will be a woman
- to change membership rules for the Security Council to ensure that an equitable share of the states represented in the Security Council have a female state leader and that half of the representatives in the Security Council are women.
In order to deeper the understanding of female leadership and the different forms it can take UNESCO shall within the same time frame take following actions within the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage:
- to encourage the State Parties of the Convention to add communities with matriarchal rule and matriarchal symbols fostered by communities in their country to the inventory of the intangible cultural heritage present in its territory.
- to develop a programme for the safeguarding and promotion of matriarchal communities and matriarchal symbols by Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In this way the United Nations are a role model for other institutions to adopt measures to establish female leadership.
