We the undersigned, tax paying citizens of the City of Toronto, urge you to legislate the workers of Local 416 and Local 79 back to work. We feel that the demands of these union workers are unreasonable and their gain is costing us great losses. Many people have been unable to work at the temporary summer jobs normally available to them through the city. We have young people out of work who depend on these jobs to support their education and living costs and the longer the strike continues the less they will afford the costs of their future. Parents who depend on daycare are at a loss for alternatives and children who depend on the basic privilege of summer recreation ie: swimming pools, Parks to Centre Island access and libraries etc. are being made victims. With the hot temperatures the city waste is becoming a threat to our health as temporary garbage sites set up in the parks are giving off terrible stench. To combat this, the city is using pesticides to keep vermin away but does little to protect domestic animals or the surrounding populous of these neighborhoods. If we try to use the alternative waste sites we are bullied and threatened by picketers. As a community we have worked very hard to preserve our environment and this strike has put environmental preservation back years. We believe that the demands of the Unions: to allow workers to bank 18 sick days a year and cash it in at their retirement is unrealistic, especially in these difficult economic times. Many of us had no knowledge of this lavish benefit and agree that it is no longer economical to allow the Union elite to benefit from this from our tax dollars. We believe that we are victims of this strike, forced to do without the City run services and recreation that we pay dearly for in our taxes. We feel that we have the right to demand that these workers return to their jobs whose salaries we pay for. We urge you to stop this strike that is crippling our economy, degrading our city and destroying our basic right to quality of life.
