We, the citizens of Nova Scotia, are in need of a provincial statutory holiday in the month of February. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario celebrate Family Day on the third Monday in February. In Prince Edward Island there is a statutory holiday on the second Monday in February called Islander Day. People in Manitoba celebrate Louis Riel Day on the third Monday in February. We the people of Nova Scotia have the fewest statutory holidays of any province in Canada. We currently only have five (5) statutory holidays. Newfoundland has six (6) statutory holidays and New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island each have seven (7) paid holidays during the calendar year. With the Nova Scotia government facing a $500-million deficit in 2009-2010, we the citizens of Nova Scotia are anticipating higher taxes and spending cuts and believe the very least the provincial government can do is introduce a statutory holiday in the month of February. The government is welcome to pick the date and have naming rights to the holiday. This petition will be handed to the Premier after February 28, 2010. If you support our effort to have a statutory holiday in February for the citizens of Nova Scotia please add your signature below.
