The fact that "rescues" are part of the firefighter's duties, I have to question whether it is legal for the FDNY to charge people to be rescued. Why should a price be put on saving lives? It should be no more legal for the FDNY to charge for rescue missions any more than it should be for a police officer to charge crime victims. Budget gaps should not be closed at the expense of people's lives. These services are already being paid for. It's called "taxes". Why should the FDNY be allowed to double dip? If left unchallenged, "rescue" businesses will pop up like ambulance chasers and the FDNY would be obsolete. Accidents are called accidents for a reason and the FDNY should not be allowed to capitalize on someone's pain or even death.
