At CSM Charing Cross Road we always struggled with little facilities and small spaces to work in, but having NO space at KX is a serious issue that we feel is having a negative impact on our course. Before the move to the new building at Kings Cross, FCP had a small room on the 3rd floor at Charing Cross which Year 3 used. Year 1 and Year 2 were shifted between 501 and the small seminar room. While the rooms were too small we felt we had a place that we could go to and were core to FCP’s identity. Although we knew that moving the CSM colleges under one roof meant less space, what it has really meant for FCP is no space at all and consequently no identity at KX. We were all looking forward to the move and were sold the idea that KX was about everyone being together, making working together more dynamic and easier. However we now feel unimportant, isolated and not supported at all. FCP has the second highest application rate in BA Fashion and FCP does not have specialist equipment or technicians. As we all are paying the same fees it seems slightly unfair that FCP has been short changed. We feel FCP is integral to BA Fashion – we work across all pathways in joint projects and even work on the MA Fashion Show. FCP students are called upon to assist with organizing various college events – (e.g CSM CXR Party and KX launch event) as we are hopefully trusted as highly proactive, creative and organized students. As FCP students we feel this lack of space in Kings Cross is a threat to our creative development. We do not have anywhere where we all can sit down, work together, collaborate and enjoy being a FCP student – something that we are very proud of. There is no phone reception in the building, so contacting each other to meet up is another problem making it even harder for us to communicate. It is also frustrating that there seems to be lot of unused and empty spaces in the college, for example the unused dance studios on the 3rd floor. Three amazing big rooms that for now are empty or being used as storage spaces. For a building that is meant to be about working together, FCP feels disparate, isolated and rejected. To see the impressive new building with so much space, but no room for us is depressing. We strongly feel FCP & FHT like all other pathways in BA Fashion should be treated equally. We hope the college with support FCP & FHT to get a room each so we can continue being proud to study at Central Saint Martins.
