Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a series of completely preventable mental and physical birth defects resulting from maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. FASD are lifelong conditions that can significantly impact on the life of the individual and those around them. There is currently no reliable evidence on the incidence of FASD in the Uk. Much of the evidence derives from research in the USA and Canada. FASD is regarded as the leading non-genetic cause of intellectual disability in the Western World.
