We call on the Fascinations store located at the northwest corner of Tatum and Thunderbird roads in Phoenix, Arizona to remove its sexually provocative and indecent window displays. We not only find the displays incompatible and inappropriate for the surrounding family oriented community, but offensive and unfit for minors.

The Fascinations store located at Tatum and Thunderbird roads is situated on the corner of a very busy intersection on a heavily trafficked thoroughfare and within a half mile of four elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, and an equal number of childcare and preschool facilities (some located at the same intersection). Whereas this adult clothing and accessory chain has a legal RIGHT within the current parameters of Phoenix city code to locate a store at this intersection, we appeal to the company’s RESPONSIBILITY to our community and the children and families that commute through this corridor every day. We ask that they consider more judiciously their choice of window displays, imagery, and descriptive placards.

We understand that these displays are a major part of the company’s marketing strategy. They raise curiosity and entice potential customers to come in to the store. However, it should be recognized that adults are not the only audience that view the store’s displays. They are equally available to minors traveling through this area. Images are powerful and leave impressions. The images found in the window displays of this Fascinations store are harmful to the developing minds of children. It is irresponsible for Fascinations, or any related store, to place sexually suggestive and provocative pictures in full view of the public without taking into consideration the harmful effects of these pictures on minors who see them just as often as the company’s target customer, but without the mental and emotional maturity to evaluate them. The general public and lawmakers understand this as evident by several Arizona statutes that protect minors from public presentations of sexual activity and indecency. In addition, we find it contradictory for this Fascinations store to shelter and protect children from their sexually oriented merchandise by not allowing them to enter their stores until they are 18, but at the same time giving minors full view of referenced merchandise via two, store-length floor to ceiling window displays.

We call on the store manager at the Tatum and Thunderbird intersection and the executive officers of Fascinations to re-evaluate the displays of the store in question and to reflect the family oriented community where it is located.
