What we want to do:

We want Family Planning be a central foci of the Better Planet Project platform as it significantly influences individuals, families, communities and our environment. Provision of universal Family Planning is a crucial factor to creating a sustainable planet.

We want women and their partners around the world to have complete, safe and consistent access to family planning services so they can choose when to have children and how many to have.

How we want to do it:

We want the Better Planet Project to allow for-

a) Creation of a research/teaching chair position focusing on topics related to family planning

b) Provision of funding and financial assistance for graduate students pursuing research that impacts family planning

c) Established relationships between family planning-oriented organizations so as to create employment, internship and co-op opportunities for for UofGuelph students further strengthening UofGuelph's contributions to family planning

How we intend to get there?

With your help!! We plan to present our idea and signed petition to Alastair Summerlee in order to prove that UofG students feel strongly about their university making a signifiant impact on environmental sustainability via family planning initiatives.

Please take the time to show your support!

Every minute a women dies from a pregnancy-related complication, most of which are preventable. At least 200 million women want access to the safe and effective family planning methods that would help prevent such pregnancy-related complications. However, for many women in the global South this dream will not become a reality due to factors such as poverty, cultural or religious constraint or the absence of consistently funded local, national or international family planning assistance.

Family Planning, whether in the global North or South, is a multi-faceted approach to maternal health that should offer woman and their partners assistance with:

• Pre-conception counselling – planning when to have children and how large of a family to have;
• Birth control – a variety of reliable birth control methods must be made available and accessible to women and their partners on a consistent basis;
• Infertility management;
• Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) management – many of the techniques involved in family planning additionally provide protection against STIs, most importantly HIV/AIDS
• Sexuality education – provision of educational programs to support birth control use, prenatal and postnatal family health and all aspects of family planning.

Presently, the world's populations is booming at over 7 billion and that number is growing at an unsustainable rate. Family Planning is an effective way to help slow population growth improving quality of life and decrease the environmental impact of human populations.
