16 Brenda TigheThe First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. The so-called Fairness Doctrine would abridge freedom of speech by imposing rules on speech, especially in the arena of radio. These rules would lead to station owners simply throwing up their hands and abandoning the format altogether. Free speech would not be served by fewer talk radio stations and more stations with an easy listening or sports or other music format. The Fairness Doctrine was used years ago as a tool to balance discussions when there were very few TV stations and radio stations. Now we have a plethora of different media outlets, including the Internet. People have any number of places they can go to in order to get a variety of opinions. The Fairness Doctrine is not needed for balance; rather, its proponents wish to use it as a tool to get programs with which they disagree, off the air. This is a violation of the First Amendment.
