According to The World Fair Trade Organization (wfto.com), fair trade is "a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade." It is about development that is sustainable and ensuring that workers' and producers' rights are secured and adhered to in high labour industries in some of the poorest parts of the world (mainly in the South).

This involves making consumers aware of what is happening on the side of trade that they don't see, and calling for change in international trade rules so that trade is done justly. Fairtrade ensures that workers and producers are being paid and treated fairly, but we feel that more could be done, and the U.K. are in a position to help.

In order for retailers to make a profit from sales, they have to add their own profit margin, which means that when you buy a Fairtrade marked product, you at the point of handing your money over are the ones paying for all the good that Fairtrade do.

The problem is that in the U.K., many people are experiencing financial difficulty. The decisions they are making in their weekly shop are based mainly on price and a penny of difference in price can be the deciding factor in which product to buy.

We are simply asking the grocery retailers operating in the U.K. to reduce their profit margins in the name of fair trade at an affordable price. By signing this petition you are pledging to buy fair trade marked products over non-fair trade marked products because the price will no longer be a factor.
