Comments: I feel the proposal that the M.O.E. is suggesting is totally unacceptable. The education system, in my opinion, is already far too lenient on the students. They need to understand dicipline and responsibility.

Comments: I am in 100% agreement with Caroline Orchard. If students are not given a grade they deserve they are not only being hurt themselves, but also the students who work hard for their grades. In the end society pays.

Comments: Way to go, Caroline! it is about time the public wake up and realize what the Ministry is doing to harm the previous good name of public education in Ontario. Good luck!

Comments: cannot understand how the province can believe they are encouraging good work habits by allowing plagarism, cheating, tardiness etc. is this the future employee the province wants to hire.

Comments: I fully support this petition. As a previous teacher with the Ottawa District School Board and a current employee of Algonquin College I have seen the results of this policy. More and more students are not prepared for the expectations of College. Many parents have told me that high school did not prepare them and therefore they end up dropping out. How successful is that

Comments: It should be a major priority that this policy be revised. The students are not being taught the importance of accountability or respectfulness of deadlines.

Comments: An unearned pass is a disservice to everyone; students, parents, teachers, post secondary educators, potential employers and our nation. It means the system has created a person whose development has truly been stunted for they will soon learn the hard way that the world around them will not give them a free pass but require them to earn everything through hard, competent work, done on time to standards in order to satisfy specified goals. Shame on the fools who would lead them to believe otherwise!

Comments: My neice has come from a school in southern Ontario to Ottawa to complete grade 11 & 12. She is struggling with the differences in expectations re: timelines, deadlines - and her year is in jeopardy.Students at this stage require the structure to help them learn organizational skills. The structure that is presently in place feeds into the sense of entitlement that is proliferating in this age group.

Comments: I am a retired professor. I found too many students expecting to get through my courses without having to do any work. When caught handing in plagiarized work, their response was that everyone did it. They got zero. Many tried it several times and, although they were bright enough to succeed, they failed.

Comments: I absolutely agree that this policy is ridiculous. It is not teaching our children the importance that failure can in their lives can teach them something important. We all need as many life skills in this fast paced age and learning to overcome a failure and move forward is extremely important. This policy penalizes the students who do hand in work on time and study for tests, often working late to get work handed in by the due date, in that they often are forced to hand in work that they would have liked another day to work on. In turn, sometimes their grade suffers because the work is not the best they would like it to be, but they feel it is important to respect the due date set out by the teacher. What are we doing to these kids who see that there is no penalty imposed by handing in a late assignment or not being penalized for repeatedly failing a test

Comments: This policy is almost backwards -- we need stricter policies in this regard. Yes, there may be reasons for re-evaluations, but students should definitely be penalized for handing in assignments late, without valid reasons. Good luck with this petition.

Comments: This policy of "pass at any cost" does not teach my son to take responsibility for his work, manage his time, or meet deadlines -- all critical life skills. Policies (and funding) that supported differentiated learning and differentiated assessments would go a lot farther to help my son learn, boost his self-esteem, and make him want to stay in school. I appreciate that there is a teacher that is willing to speak out on this issue.
