Name: Bob Kynaston on Jul 27, 2007Comments: I always assumed that our governments were democratically elected by the people, to do the bidding of the people. It is so very obvious that the majority of British people are crying out for a referendum. To deny the British people this referendum would certainly be most un-democratic. If you are acting in the interests of the British people, then you should allow a referendum in this most important of matters and national interests!Flag

Name: Phil Jones on Jul 27, 2007Comments: UK politicians have always held the populace in complete disdain -- more so than in any of the other countries I've lived. For them to think that they can shove a new system of government (province in a new federal state) down our throats without the people having a say is simply mind-boggling. Anyone trained in constitutional law such as myself can see in the EU Constitution document all the indicia of a federal state (division of powers, paramountcy, etc.). It's just unbelievable that Gordon Brown can be trying to pass this off as nothing more than a further treaty among sovereign states. The effect of the EU Constitution is that the sovereign states become provinces in a new state run by a new central government ("the EU shall have 'legal personality' ") in Brussels. This is a BIG TIME change in the system of government of the UK and will, by implication, change the nationality of everybody who is British to European. Have you ever heard of a New York citizen or a Ohio citizenFlag
