Bicycle ridership has been increasing rapidly in Syracuse and offers many benefits to the University Hill community. Bicycle commuters stay fit while commuting, have zero carbon emissions, and they reduce the need for ever more parking lots and parking garages on the Hill.

The seven blocks of Euclid Avenue between Comstock and Westcott carry more bicycle traffic than any other route in the city. This stretch of road has also seen an alarming increase in bicycle/car accidents in recent years.

To encourage bicycle ridership on the Hill, and to increase safety for bicycle riders, we request that the city of Syracuse implement the following changes on Euclid Avenue for a period of one year. At the end of the year there would be an evaluation to determine whether these changes should become permanent:

1) Remove all parking, during all hours, on both sides of Euclid Avenue between Comstock Avenue and Westcott Street.

2) Using paint, designate five foot wide bicycle lanes on both the north and south sides of Euclid along this seven block stretch. The interior of these lanes should be painted a distinctive color so they are obvious to both cyclists and drivers.
