Name: Michele G. Miller on Jan 26, 2012Organization (Not Required):City, State: SLC, UTComments: To truly meet the medical needs of everyone in our country - all the other industrialized, far less wealthy countries have managed to do it - medical care has to be heavy on prevention, not allow insurance to be denied due to pre-existing conditions, MUST include coverage for 'mental illnesses' because:1. they are medical conditions caused by physical and/or chemical changes in the brain, 2. they are very treatable, 3. treating these disorders not only relieves disabling and overwhelming distress, they also 4. mean many less sick days from work and make the workers more productive, 5. would cause a drop in violent crimes (road rage, rapes, domestic violence, child abuse, gang activity and other assaults), and finally, 6. would send a message that we have an enlightened and educated society that recognizes that what is good for its citizens is good for our nation's greatness, stability and prosperity. Very many people's divorces, substance abuse, violence at home and in the community, losing their jobs, etc., are due to undiagnosed and hence untreated brain disorders (aka mental illnesses).A recent study proved that, big surprise, poverty causes depression. People who are depressed and have no hope and no help are very likely to physically, emotionally and/or sexually act out, hurting themselves, their family, or the random members of society they run in to. These 'invisible disorders" cause so much despair and often people suffer needlessly for years before seeking treatment due to their or others' ignorance or by being misdiagnosed because of lack of medical practioners to look for a cause they can't see. I'm a clinical social worker who's been practicing for 30 years now, I can tell you the joy and overwhelming relief people feel when they experience the benefits of medication; as well as the tragic suffering by teenagers, their parents and other adults when they or a loved one becomes addicted to illegal drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, etc., self-medicating to escape their anguish and despair. And all too often they don't mention how terrible they're feeling because there's still such a stigma regarding brain disorders. When they realize what's wrong or they finally have access to medical treatment, they've suffered so much pain and hopelessness they just can't stand it even one more day. They end their pain by ending their lives. You can't put a price on the prevention of these tragedies.Flag

Name: Julie Mitton on Jan 26, 2012Organization (Not Required): Advocate work Non ProfitCity, State: PerryComments: It is important for insurance and others to recognize the need for mental health care. We are in a crisis with mental health care. I have a sister who sits in a state hospital due to the lack of adequate housing for her. We must fully support and fund all mental health initiatives. All individuals need to be able to be able to be served. Money should not be a factor. We must wake up in America and serve those with mental health issues. The rate of homelessness and crime will increase without continued support. I do not hear about the mentally ill from those in office. We must put more dollars in. Please help those who cannot help themselves and are in desperate need of services. Thank youFlag
