A petition of The Ethnic Studies Student Association (ESSA); Addressed to Dean Richard Dubanoski, College of Arts and Sciences; We the undersigned would like to bring your attention to the following problem, with a recommendation: Following the Senate Resolution No. 66 S.D. 1 which proclaimed 2010 as the year of Ethnic Studies in Hawai‛i, ESSA has witnessed a demand from the student population for an Ethnic Studies Graduate Program at the University of Hawai‛i at Mānoa. The concepts of race, ethnicity, identity, and other socio-political themes are prevalent and important in the current social environment and we feel that in order to serve the people of Hawai‛i, the University of Hawai‛i should provide opportunities to expound upon these concepts and themes further. The extension of the Ethnic Studies Department into a higher degree of learning at the graduate level would contribute to a sensitivity of ethnic diversity that can only help enhance the university and this state. Therefore we ask that you please establish an Ethnic Studies Master’s Program at the University of Hawai‛i at Mānoa. Agreed upon by the following people:
