We do not show very much because we have to pay to have care for other horses and animals and would participate more if there was a location closer to home.Flag

Name: Dawn Bates on Feb 25, 2004Comments: Owning horses and participating in equine sports are the most wonderful ways of teaching young people responsiblilty and dedication to hard work. Equestrians learn to set goals and compete in a friendly competive atmosphere. Families,of all diverse economic statis, are brought together to experience a joy and comaraderie that developes from hours of close personal contact at the arenas. Equestrian families are the most sharing group of people I have ever been around. Whether you need a pair of boot socks, show sheen, or something to eat or drink, someone is always there offering to share. These people have a dedication to thier communities as well. I can't count the number of horse shows in which we have participated to raise money for families, communities or organizations in need of financial support. County funds could not be used any wiser than toward an Equestrian areana. Even children who do not own horses can benefit by having a place to come enjoy being around and learning about this special breed.Flag

Name: Janet Dyson on Feb 26, 2004Comments: Anson County: I have two Foundation Quarter Horses horses, a member of Foundation Quarter Horses of the Southeast. Our assoc has four shows per year. This is the second year for this group, and the first year was very successful. Vet bill per year on yearly vaccinations: $350. $$1060 on feed per year, $200-$300 for hay. farrier $400 per year. showing expenses: $1500 truck/trailer maintenance i do not board so there is property tax, fencing, stalls, mowing expence, weed control, fertilizer/pasture management in which the ag ext agents are necessary along with farm supply experts. are in the process of buying a couple of cattle for teaching horses to work. approx 7 acres. Hotel expense: at least $60 per weekend for shows. $45 for trailer hook up at the show grounds. $6 per bag of shavings, which is good for local economy. Trips to wal-mart for things we forget to pack. We have traveled to Harriman Tn for shows due to lack of facility availability. That is a seven hr trip from Monroe. The county would truly benefit from a covered arena that is well planned for all disciplines of equine, livestock, and shows for other animals. We do not need this arena to be designed for indoor sports. The need for footing for livestock is very important and would not work if designed for sports.Flag

I spend $910 or more per year in farrier fees, plus at least $400 annually on vet care, and a countless amount of money on tack, equestrian clothing, travel and club fees. I own both Tennessee Walking horses and a hunter/jumper. I traveled to Winston-Salem for my first hunter show last year and can't wait to go to another. Why can't we have these shows HERE I am very much in favor an Equestrian Center. It would be profitable. S. WandlerFlag

Name: Cherie Steele on Mar 3, 2004Comments: I live in Lancaster Co. S.C., but we participate in equine events in both Carolina's as well as all over the country. A nice facility is this area could draw people from all parts of the country to participate and spend money in activities in Union Co. There is a great need for additional horse complex's in N.C. As a member of the S.C., N.C., and American Paint Horse Associations I am well aware of the fact that the N.C. club is looking for a nice facility to host shows. Currently the faciltiy in Arden, N.C. is the facility of choice for the large zone shows. These shows bring in 350+ horses and families from across the nation. The Raleigh complex is not in a central enough location for National use. Charlotte Meto area is (Union Co.) Recently there have been rumbles of a possible complex in Cabarrus Co. Don't let them bet you to the draw. This can be a big money raiser for any county. The equine industry is a booming business and Union Co. is surrounded by horse farms and ranches. The number of organized equine associations in this area is numerouse. What better place to put a complex Looking across the line and hoping!! Cherie SteeleFlag

Name: Gena Simpson on Mar 7, 2004Comments: I am the daughter of Mitzi Simpson. We own and run a horse farm in the New Salem area. At our barn there are 14 horses and 1 donkey. our farm is on a spread of 47.7 acres. The amount spent yearly on the up keep of the horses is hard to determine but its around 10,000 a year. The farrier and vetranary bills per year is around 2,000 to 2,500. My yearly showing costs come up to be 500 to 1,000. I am an instruter and I train my own horses but in the last year I have spent 600 on a monthes training. I am a memeber of a 4H group, a local saddle club, the AQHA, and ApHA. The costs of these groups is about 200 a year. I am in need of a local equine facility and I hope I have helped make this possible.Flag
