Name: John Eves on Nov 6, 2003Comments: The case against hunting with hounds (and, for that matter, hunting with rods, guns, falcons, hawks, ferrets etc)is based upon opinion and not upon fact. From time to time, people tell me that I shouldn't do this or that and their advice is based upon scientific fact. No such justification is given when people tell me that I shouldn't be allowed to hunt with hounds. The only clear reason for their advice seems to be that they simply don't like hunting. I think that a government which can actually consider banning something just because it doesn't like it is not fit to govern. I don't hunt with hounds but I do hunt with a rod, gun and gundog. It is now very clear that the opponents of hunting with hounds also oppose hunting with rods and guns. They don't make distinctions between different forms of hunting and neither do I. An attack on one is an attack on all. I will defend my hunting by defending hunting with hounds. I would be extremely short-sighted to do otherwise as I do not believe the Blair Government's promises not to attack shooting or fishing. If Blair is really interested in animal welfare, he could start by asking Tony Banks and Gerald Kaufmann to tell us their views on ritual slaughter. As prominent ''animal rights'' spokesmen, they must surely have a view one way or the other. Strangely enough, the RSPCA doesn't have one - try searching the RSPCA's website for ''halal meat''. No mention even in the light of the Farm Animal Welfare Council's recent call for a ban on the grounds of cruelty. The RSPCA must be dreading the day it has to publicly express its opinion on the matter. It will be highly entertaining! John EvesFlag

Why waist valuable parlimentry time persecuting a minority for a humane and proven way of controlling the fox population in the country.Flag
