The entire ambience of the game depends on cheering students creating noise along the side of the court. As an alum who has been attending games since 1965 I implore you to return student seating to the traditional sideline.Flag

Name: Daniel Baldonado on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 2014Comments: When the Den voted, we were told that the student section would be split up into three parts, one in the sidelines, one in the mid section, and the rest in the upper section. We were not told that the mid section part would be right behind the baskeball court. This changes everything.Flag

Name: Seth Chandler on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 1981Comments: Goodness gracious, sakes alive. The athletic department has trampled on the legacy of John Wooden, stifled dissent, attempted to deceive students and alumni, misrepresented a student opinion poll. Not only do I demand that the student section be restored to the sidelines, I demand that Dan Guerrero and his whole crew of second-rate, dishonest, incompetent hacks be summarily fired and escorted from campus. No one who had a hand in the decision to move the student section behind the basket should spend one more day representing the university in any capacity. It was a shameless, greedy, mocking sell-out of the whole concept of student athletics. It was indecent and unforgivable. UCLA will not get one penny of my money, not ever, not when I am alive and not even over my dead body in my estate unless the student section is restored to the sidelines as it was originally depicted on the Campaign of Champions fund raising pamphlet.Flag

Name: Randy Bautista on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 2005Comments: I am extremely concerned about the long-term effects of taking the students away from the sideline. You'll be asking the alumni to pay for more for premium seats in return for a less-exciting atmosphere, caused not only by moving the most excited and motivated fans to the recesses of the stadium, but also to the damage done to recruiting, resulting in a less competitive basketball team. I am disappointed with the lack of leadership from the Morgan Center (ex: inability to keep Coach Caldwell, lack of sports promotion to students, football coach selection, etc.), and the decision to evict the Den from the sidelines is the last straw. DO NOT EXPECT ME TO ATTEND ANY UCLA ATHLETIC EVENTS UNTIL THE STUDENTS ARE PLACED WHERE THEY BELONG, ALONG THE SIDELINES.Flag

It was incredible to be able to sit near midcourt near. Putting the students behind a basket and pretending that you are doing it for their benifit is simply ridiculous. It is nothing more than a ploy to free up prime seats to be sold off to pay for the renovations of Pauley. If that is really your intention then at least be honest and admit it.Flag

Name: Andrew De Sosa on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 1980Comments: Alum and long-time football season ticket holder - maybe not much longer. It is shameful that students have been relegated to behind the basket seats at the renovated Pauley Pavilion - especially so due to the duplicitous process used to justify the move. Students are the primary customer for any University, their raison d'etre, if you will. Enhancing the student experience both in the classroom and out should be the primary mission of the University administration. The rest of us had our time and it was great. That's why we care so much that today's students should have the same opportunities that we had. The first step should be restoring the student section to the sideline in the new Pauley as depicted in the original renovation plan. But why stop there? Why not expand the student section center court all the way up to the rafters? While you're at it, you should do the same at the Rose Bowl where again, students are relegated to one corner of the end zone. I would gladly give up my seats if I knew they were going to students. Following through on this would show that you truly care about your primary customer - the student. Anything less would be an epic failure of what should be your primary mission.Flag

Name: Ken Delpit on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 1968Comments: Pauley must be for students, first. In my day, I had sideline seats at both Pauley Pavilion and the L.A. Coliseum. Experiencing high-level UCLA sports up close is probably 75% of what made me a lifelong Bruin. Students today deserve the same, rich experience. Students and team are one and the same. They BELONG together. Banishing students to the endline, away from the team, diminishes the student experience tremendously, insulates the team from their fellow students, and diminishes overall enthusiasm in Pauley. You cannot do this. You must not do this.Flag

Name: Paul Parker on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 1994Comments: Some of the best times I had as a UCLA student was sitting in the lower section sideline of the UCLA Basketball games. It was an integral part of my UCLA experience. Future students need to be able to experience that. Students are the loudest fans in the arena and we need to have the best home court advantage possible. Having them close to visiting team's bench is a huge advantage.Flag

Name: Jeremy Kuperberg on Apr 27, 2011Graduating Year.: 2012Comments: As a senior next year, I will not be able to "benefit" from the supposed improvements to the Pauley experience, instead having to follow my Bruins around SoCal next basketball season. I am, however, outraged at the lack of concern for the student experience demonstrated by the new seating plan- the day that UCLA is clearly more concerned with dollars and cents than with the student experience (not to mention home-court advantage!!!) is the day that it ceases to be a true public school, for the students and for the people, and begins to resemble more and more private businesses like the joke across town. As a Bruin, i refuse to let this happen. Stop misleading your own people through vague surveys, stop hurting your own program, and give the students courtside seats!!!Flag

Moving the student section to one end of the court will diminish the enthusiasm at the games. Furthermore, if the students are irrelevant in the scheme of intercollegiate athletics, then why should the university even be involved in intercollegiate athletics. If moving the students is the cost of the renovation, then it is not a worthwhile renovation.Flag

I vow to never donate to the school until 1) Dan Guerrero is gone (for mulitple reasons - not this issue alone) 2) the student section at Pauley is back on the sideline where it belongs. Students and student athletes are not meant to be tools of the university. The university exists for the students, not the students for the university.Flag
