Name: Lewisburg Prison Project on Feb 15, 2011Comments: At the Lewisburg Prison Project, we get dozens of letters each week from inmates at USP Lewisburg's Special Management Unit. These letters report inmates being chained for up to 36 hours, repeated acts of violence from certain correctional officers and medical staff, and procedures that border on torture. The goal of the SMU needs to be reexamined by the Department of Justice - from the letters we receive, it seems the SMU program only heightens the level of prison violence and the opportunity for certain staff members to abuse their power with little or no oversight.Flag
