We, the members of the Seattle University community, hereby demand an end to Seattle University's partnership with Verizon Wireless and any of its affiliates. This includes facilitating the transfer of money between SU and Verizon, removing all Verizon advertisements on SU campus and all advertisements off campus establishing a connection between SU and Verizon, and ending the sale of Verizon products on SU campus. Furthermore, we demand the establishment of two review committees to review further partnerships Seattle University enters into: one committee composed of Jesuits to ensure that the potential partner upholds Catholic and Jesuit values and one committee composed of SU students to ensure the potential partner upholds the values of the student body. We demand these things for the following reasons: 1. The presence of Verizon Wireless on Seattle University disrupts the academic environment of Seattle University. This presence includes, but is not limited to, physical advertisements on SU campus and the surrounding area, Verizon advertisements emailed to students from the school, and a new on-campus Verizon store within the SU campus store in the University Services building. We believe it is self-evident that this presence is a distraction to students, and hinders the ability of SU students to achieve academic excellence. This comes into conflict with Seattle University's goal of placing the good of its students first. 2. Verizon Wireless does not uphold the Catholic and Jesuit values SU is based on. These values, as described in the Seattle University mission statement, include: Fostering a concern for justice and the competence to promote it. Developing responsible leaders committed to the common good. Creighton University further adds the following as Jesuit values: Sharing gifts, pursuing justice, and having concern for the poor and marginalized. Teaching behaviors that reflect critical thought and responsible action on moral and ethical issues. Verizon Wireless undermines values in the following ways: Monitoring customers' internet usage and sharing this information with third-party companies. Illegally blocking access to applications on its products. Violating contract terms and federal regulations in its billing practices. Overcharging for services provided to the U.S. Government. Limiting the customer's ability to use preferred search engines on their phone, as part of a partnership with Microsoft Corporation. Charging unjust and unethical fees that have become to the attention of the Federal Communications Commission. Refusing to negotiate with unions in good faith. Engaging in monopolistic and anti-competitive practices such as vertical tying. These activities are illegal, immoral, and inconsistent with Jesuit ideals. 3. The activities described above, in addition to being in conflict with Jesuit values, are in conflict with the values of the Seattle University student body. For these reasons, we demand an immediate expulsion of Verizon Wireless from Seattle University as well as a severing of all official ties between Verizon Wireless and SU. We also demand the establishment of the two committees described above to prevent formation of problematic partnerships in the future, and to support the development of positive partnerships with the student body of SU.
