Name: Dina Kourda on Sep 2, 2012Comments: Animals traveling with the circus are unwilling participants. In order to get them to perform, young animals are stolen from their mothers and "broken." Circuses such as Ringling Bros put just enough money into their animals to keep them alive. Sometimes performances take precedence over vet care recommendations. In fact, just last year, RB paid a $270,000 fine (largest fine ever) to settle allegations that it violated Animal Welfare Act in its handling of exotic animals. Animal behaviorists will tell you that exotic animals have wants and needs similar to our pets at home. However, there is a vast difference between exotic or wild animals and domesticated animals. In order to keep an exotic animal "trained," they must be dominated by and fearful of humans. Training tools used include stun guns, bullhooks, whips, muzzels, ropes, chains, and even blowtorches. While it may appear to humans that circus animals enjoy performing, they do not naturally or voluntarily ride bicycles, stand on their heads, or jump through rings of fire. Further, the transport of circus animals is especially grueling. A young lion died from heat exhaustion and dehydration while in transit through the Mojave Desert in a 100+ degree box car. Many circuses do very well without the use of any animals. CdS, for example, has never used animals and have an annual revenue of over $850M. These performances are the most spectacular, the performers are all willing and paid, and animal abuse is non-existent. Aside from the animals, I am also concerned for public safety. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) approved new standards for elephant contact. It says that the public, trainers, and caretakers at these facilities will adopt Protected Contact standards which will supersede the current Free Contact. OC and LA Fairs as well as the Santa Ana Zoo have all decided that they were not willing to risk an injury or death to the public and dropped the elephant rides. For exotic animals, it's not a matter of "if" they will snap and put human life in danger, but "when." The only way to stop a rampaging elephant is by high-powered rifle or machine gun. Many communities are not equipped to handle such an incident. Countries around the world and US cities including Irvine have banned animal circuses. I'm asking the progressive Anaheim city council to do the same.Flag

Name: Jodey Eliseo on Sep 2, 2012Comments: Please follow in the footsteps of cities like Chicago and do NOT allow this in your city! I am a former performer with RBBB and believe me...the conditions for the animals, especially the elephants, is worse than what you know..even with all the video proof...still...WORSE! I, personally, called the USDA on a daily basis for 2 years straight...they came, they saw, they violated, fines were paid..they left. Repeat in the next town............and...on it goes!!!! Remember,..what is legal, for now, isn't always MORAL! Show this country what your made of...do the right thing! Blessings, JFlag
