The petition
It was decided in early August by the Food Festival Board that the Emsworth Food Festival was to be scrapped completely. Instead, there will be a series of small Sunday markets held in the South Street carpark (organised by the same company that run the Havant market). Many Emsworth residents and visitors to Emsworth are unhappy with this decision and are upset about the way in which is was made.
There is a substantial body of evidence based on the Festival’s own research and feedback to show that residents, and a majority of the town’s businesses are wholeheartedly supportive of the festival and that each year the festival brings over £200,000 into the local economy which is further boosted by returning visitors at other times during the year. The Festival had become a very unique and successful event that put Emsworth on the map and supported local businesses - something very important considering the current economic climate. The monies raised from this event also went back into community projects that benefited the local community.
Many residents cannot understand therefore why it was decided that the Emsworth Food Festival should be cancelled.
A letter was written to the Emsworth Food Festival Chairman on the 2nd Sept 2008 asking for answers to a number of questions, such as where the Food Festival funds are and why they have moved to a different account; where the minutes of the cancellation meetings are and why they have not been made public; where the evidence is behind the justification for cancelling the Food Festival, among other things - a copy can be seen here: http://www.emsworthonline.co.u...
This letter was signed by over 160 residents and is still collecting signatures.
This petition is essentially calling for the Emsworth Food Festival to return, as well as for the Chairman of the Board to respond to the letter put forward by residents of Emsworth concering the reasoning behind the decision to cancel the Food Festival.
