THIS PETITION IS TO DO AWAY WITH STROBES ON EMERGENCY VEHICLES! A couple days ago, my boyfriend and I went through a license check. The thing is, I have Hydrocephalus, a birth defect that sometimes involves seizures. At birth, I had a shunt placed in. The tube runs down my neck. It is hard for me most the time to wear a seatbelt because it presses on my tube and makes me pass out. Just so happens, I had a seizure the other night while coming home. My boyfriend removed my seatbelt so the situation wouldnt worsen. He soon regrets that. We pull up to the license check. (With these seizures, I can still see and hear everything, I just cant speak) That's how Hydrocephalus seizures are. The cop told my boyfriend to pull over to the side. While I was seizing, the cop is giving my boyfriend a hard time about me not wearing a seatbelt and he kept claiming I was faking. 1. Why would I lie about something so serious, 2. How can seizures be faked?! We got held there for a good 30-40 mins. I didnt blink the first time!! How does someone not blink for 30 minutes?? When I came to, I tried to ask the cops to turn off their strobes due to the fact that I have seizures. They refused. The way I see it, health comes first, regardless of the situation. I am not going to risk my health for any reason. I told them, if they did not turn off the strobes, or let us go, that i would have no choice but to leave the vehicle and find a safe place. I also told them that if they had to, they could arrest me. But i was not about to sit there and keep having seizures. Keep in mind, I'm 96lbs. They didnt turn off their lights, and they kept trying to pick a fight with me about "faking" my seizure. I grab my boyfriends phone and try to call my mom to help. She is my caregiver and I thought they would reason with her being that she is older. I get out of the truck, and start walking while trying to call mom. Before I know it, I am on the ground. I started walking while talking to my mom on the phone, so they tackled me. Took my boyfriends brand new iphone, and threw it! My mom was still on the line and heard everything. There was 4 cops. Easily 200lbs each. I'm just a tiny thing. That was so un called for! I start seizing again because more lights came. They jerk me off the ground and try to make me stand. But it was physically impossible for me to. They drag me to the police car and said I was under arrest. They DID NOT mirandize me!!! Also, I recently had surgery for Gamekeeper's thumb. ( i fell down my stairs at home due to seizures, and thats how i broke my thumb). The cuffs prevented me from sitting like i was supposed to. I tried asking the cop if he could cuff me a different way because there was no way i could sit with my big arm brace behind me. He yelled at me and demanded I get in the car before he puts me in there. I try and cant. So the other cop gets on the other side and tries to pull me further into the car. I start to have another seizure and the cops start waving their flashlights in my face. By this time, they had no choice but to call the EMS. While the cops waited for the EMS, they started writing up my ticket. I got charged with no seatbelt, and disorderly conduct. When the EMS arrived, they confirmed I was for sure having a seizure. The EMS crew are like family to me because I'm in and out of there all the time. EVEN THOUGH seizures were confirmed, the cop still got me with those charges. Now I may serve time, just because I was protecting my health! Also, I am stuck with bruises on my arms and legs where the cops man handled me. Please sign this petition and share this story. EMS are supposed to save lives, not take them. I agree that vehicles such as EMS, Fire, and Police should be easily noticed. The strobes should be replaced with a solid color, or some other solution that would benefit everyone.
