    Why should ELISS come to your university?: Purdue University’s mission is to serve the citizens of Indiana in three ways: learning, discovery, and engagement and the university houses a number of interdisciplinary departments aimed at confronting societal and environmental issues. Purdue’s Global Sustainability Institute houses a number of centers which focus on energy, food security, water scarcity, environment, and climate issues. These centers would be a perfect starting point for collaboration and integration of information between students who could then work on applicable problems with community officials and leaders in the Lafayette area. There have already been several successful projects stemming from the research centers which have translated into changes in policy at the community level. The infrastructure is in place at Purdue and I think this type of program would help facilitate and train the already enthusiastic students enrolled within the different engineering, environmental, and atmospheric sciences departments.

    Why should ELISS come to your university?: Purdue's graduate students have tremendous expertise and institutional resources, but outside of a few specific applications (esp. agricultural extension) there seem to be few opportunities to interact with the local or regional community and to apply research results to policy and industry.

    Why should ELISS come to your university?: ELISS should come to Purdue University because currently there are a few programs, such as Ecological Sciences and Engineering, that facilitate interdisciplinary projects that help solve real-world problems. Being fortunate to directly benefit from these collaborations myself, I strongly feel that more of these programs need to be available for other graduate students so that they become the norm, and not the exception. Knowing that your research is directly impacting current problems and your collaborations are making a difference generates an unparalleled sense of worth in graduate school. I hope that AAAS can make this a reality for more graduate students at Purdue University.

    Why should ELISS come to your university?: ELISS should come to Purdue University because there is a critical mass of graduate students that truly believe in collaborating across boundaries to solve real-world problems. There isn't, however, a critical mass among faculty. ELISS at Purdue can help students overcome this barrier and engage not only the faculty, but community at large as well.

Although a relatively small school by enrollment numbers, Regent University graduates a high number of PhD and equivalent level professionals annually. Another success of the University is its on-going partnership with the local economy, namely the US Navy. We have an active graduate student group from all disciplines, called "ProSPER" (Washington University Graduate Students Promoting Science Policy, Education, and Research), that gives students the opportunity to explore the intersection between science and public policy. Many graduate students from this group would be excited to channel their enthusiasm for this topic into an E-LISS project.

    Why should ELISS come to your university?: Purdue has a unique collaborative environment and emphasis on interdisciplinary research; in my Master's work, we had faculty support to work as an inter-departmental team to apply agronomic field data collection towards hydrologic model development. It was such a positive experience that I chose to stay for my PhD. I think there are many students on campus (myself included) who would love the chance to take our work to the next level, to prouce high-quality research that directly addresses societal concerns.

    Why should ELISS come to your university?: Purdue has an excellent mix of science and engineering. Expertise in both theory and application, problem identification and problem solving, etc. can lead to the type of collaboration that really makes a real world difference. However, more often than not, the proper connections are not made. This isn't a matter of design, it is simply a consequence of a lack of integration that I feel ELISS can help to overcome.
