Many of us have paid into social security for much longer than we have paid into a state or federal pension. Therefore, we receive a very small pension and yet are penalized for not having thirty years into social security. Consequently, what we receive will not enable us to stop working ever. This is particularly problematic if you were out of the workforce for any amount of time caring for babies, starting a business that did not make enough at first, etc.
