The petition
Dear Member of Congress,
We the people are asking you to pass legislation that would grant tax credits and incentives to companies who design, produce, manufacture or sell electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States. Additionally, we are asking for tax credits for organizations that purchase fully electric vehicles for their fleets, such as delivery and mail services, municipal and state police, private security firms, and school and municipal bus systems.
Fully electric vehicles are better than gas-powered cars because:
1. One-third of the CO2 produced in the United States comes from cars, trucks and airplanes. EVs do not produce CO2 emissions.
2. Electricity is cheaper than gas and can come from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.
3. Electric cars are more relialbe and require less maintenance than gas-powered vehicles.
4. By using domestically-generated electricity rather than foreign oil, we can achieve energy independence and may positively affect our nation's security.
5. Electric cars can use the existing electric grid and do not require that new infrastructure be built.
The technology to mass produce EVs exists. But without strong leadership and vision, ingenuity and a commitment from government to bring these vehicles to market, the car companies may be reluctant to do so.
We believe that EVs are vital for the future of our nation and indeed our world. The United States would realize health, environmental, financial and even security benefits by switching from gas-powered vehicles to fully-electric vehicles. The technology exists and the time is right for leading all Americans into a better environmental future.
